The good news is you don’t need to be an experienced biker to come helibiking! You only need to be able to be comfortable riding a bike on a gravel road. We have a variety of trails to choose from to suit all ability levels. Complete our ability guide to understanding what terrain is best for you.

At Southern Lakes Helibike we customise your experience to your ability level. There is terrain for everyone. Private charters provide the most freedom and exclusivity to your specific group. Day packages may include other guests. In some cases when there is varied ability level we will add another guide to the group.

The runs vary depending on the terrain area and ability level of the guests. Some of our rides vary from 5kms to 35kms.

We have various rides in the Southern Lakes area. Terrain selection for the day is completely dependant upon weather and rider ability levels.

Anywhere from rolling flat farmland, scenic lakeside touring to well contoured open alpine terrain and beautiful New Zealand native beech forests. Some of our products combine all of these unique environments and terrain in one ride

We are under strict weight restrictions for our helicopter loads so we weigh each guest to determine if we can fit 4 or 5 clients in the heli with one guide.

Our season can start in late September and runs to the end of May with our busiest period being from late November to early February. December is really busy so make sure you book in advance.

Yes but our EFTPOS facility allows us to take other currencies.

Booking farther in advance ensures you get the ideal day and time you desire but you are able to book your trip up to 24 hours in advance.

Book directly on our website, or give us a call or an email and we will talk you through it. Once you confirm we will ask for a small deposit which is fully refundable if we can’t fly.

Try and be as compact as you can in the helicopter as there isn’t much room. We provide everything you need for the day so try to fit your camera, sunscreen etc into your pocket. We will supply some small backpacks should you desire.

Wear what you would normally wear for a day out on your bike. A warm layer and a shell jacket are recommended. Make sure you bring your gloves, helmet, protective gear and bike equipment. Items can easily be rented should you need them.

For most of our runs we recommend full suspension bikes with 100mm or more travel on the front and rear. Hardtail bikes on our ‘green’ trails will be fine however front suspension is a must! Talk to our booking offices in Queenstown or Wanaka to make sure you have the right equipment for the day, if you don’t we’ll assist you with suitable rentals

We want to ensure you have a day to remember therefore we ensure your guide takes some photos on the day of your trip. If safety is compromised photos will not be taken. You are also welcome to bring your own cameras and we encourage it. Should you be interested in a professional, this can be arranged at an additional cost. Please enquire during booking.

This is your day and we do our best to make sure each and every person enjoys it. We group people together with others of similar ability, and your guide is there to keep you safe and to take you to terrain that is comfortable for you to bike. Communicate with your guide and they will help you achieve what you need to from the day.
